Kansas City ceramic artist Mark Barta.
Barta Ceramics is my studio practice in Olathe, part of the greater Kansas City area. I make wheel-thrown and hand-built vessels that explore tactile texture, earthy color, crystalline glaze, and the expressive possibilities of form.
Clay is both structure and record: a material that holds the pressure of a tool, the pull of the wheel, the flow of glaze, and the atmosphere of a firing.
My primary focus is the vessel. Some pieces begin on the pottery wheel and are altered; others are built by hand. I use carving, stamping, layering, and raised texture to give each surface a physical rhythm.
Glaze adds another layer of movement. Earthy surfaces emphasize the character of clay, while crystalline glazes allow visible crystals to grow in the kiln. Across both approaches, variation is part of the work rather than a flaw to remove.

The portfolio includes decorative vases, functional forms, and sculptural vessels. Each piece is made as an individual object, with decisions guided by the clay, the silhouette, and the way a glaze responds to the surface underneath it.

Carving, stamping, raised pattern, and layered surface make the movement of the hand visible and invite a closer look.
Crystalline glaze
Crystal-forming glazes bring chemistry and controlled firing into the final composition, producing a surface unique to one kiln cycle.
Form
Wheel-thrown, altered, and hand-built vessels move between functional pottery and sculptural object without losing the presence of clay.

The work is made in Olathe, Kansas, within the Kansas City metropolitan area. The studio is a place for ongoing tests: developing forms, comparing glaze results, photographing finished vessels, and carrying useful discoveries into the next piece.
