Ten Recent Vessels: Crystalline Glaze, Raised Texture, and Form

One of the things I enjoy most about working in clay is seeing how differently surface and form can shape the character of a vessel. I recently photographed this group of ten ceramic pieces, and together they show several directions I have been exploring in the studio: blue crystalline glazes, altered closed forms, raised texture, and saturated color.

Although the group ranges from sculptural bottles to an open functional form, I keep returning to the same question: how can the silhouette and surface strengthen one another? These pieces are my latest answers.

Crystalline glaze: patterns shaped by the firing

My crystalline-glazed vessels usually begin with a clear profile that gives the fired surface room to develop. Across this group, cobalt, pale blue, celadon, cream, and warm gold grounds create very different moods.

Some of the crystals gather into large, rounded blooms. Others form smaller pools or sit within a delicate crackle network. Because these patterns grow inside the glaze during a carefully controlled kiln-cooling cycle, they are not painted on and cannot be duplicated exactly. Even vessels made with related materials develop their own visual character.

The tall cobalt bottle has a narrow pointed neck and a deep surface that moves through blue and smoky violet. The blue and gold bottle changes the outline with a gently curved tip, allowing the silhouette to feel active before the glaze is even considered.

The lighter pieces reveal a different side of the process. Pale blue crystals open across a cream ground on the tall vase, while the rounded celadon vessel carries softer clusters beneath a warm dark rim. The fuller blue and gold bottle uses a long flared neck to balance the visual weight of its crystalline surface.

Black texture and altered profiles

Two sculptural bottles take the work in another direction. Instead of allowing glaze crystals to organize the surface, these pieces use a raised black vertical passage to divide the form.

On the pink and maroon bottle, the dark line feels almost like a seam running from the neck to the foot. The pale blue bottle has a softer, rounder profile, while its glossy black passage catches the light and gives the vessel a strong tactile presence. In both pieces, the black surface acts like a drawing across the volume, emphasizing the shape beneath it.

A 3D-printed form with tactile rhythm

The deep red cup brings the same interest in surface to a form made with a different tool: it was 3D printed in clay with my Eazao X-1 Potter. The printer extrudes a continuous coil of soft clay through a nozzle, following a sliced digital model one layer at a time. As those layers build upward, the programmed path becomes both the structure of the cup and part of its visible texture.

Clay 3D printing still involves the full ceramic process. The clay consistency and extrusion rate have to remain balanced so each new layer bonds without deforming the walls. After printing, the piece must dry slowly and evenly before it can be bisque fired, glazed, and fired again. The machine establishes the form, but material preparation, toolpath decisions, drying, and firing all influence the finished result.

What I am carrying forward

Seen together, these pieces remind me why I continue moving between glaze chemistry and physical texture. A crystalline firing leaves room for growth, variation, and surprise. Altering a silhouette or building a repeated surface lets me work more directly. Both approaches preserve evidence of the making process.
