From Code to Clay: Learning to 3D Print with Clay

When I got into 3D printing with clay, it grew out of my love for plastic 3D printing.

From plastic precision to ceramic reality

I was hooked on precision, proportions, and textures, but the first real lesson was that clay doesn’t behave like plastic.

A deceptively easy first print

My first test print was smooth, almost deceptively easy. Pre-loaded clay, pre-designed file. But the moment I tried to load my own clay and design my own shapes, reality set in.

Learning through failure

Overhangs collapse. Air pockets stop the print cold. And pretty digital curves turn into slumps.

There were plenty of frustrating teardowns—taking the machine apart again because one tiny variable went sideways—but that’s where most of the learning happened.

When the layers finally land

The wins were slower, but incredibly satisfying. Sitting through a two-hour print, watching each layer land just right, and then finally holding a piece I had designed myself—that moment made every failure worth it.

Respect the overhang

If I had to pass on one lesson, it’s this: respect overhangs. Clay has limits, and learning them is part of the craft.

It’s that tension between precision and patience that keeps me hooked.
